LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Pacific baseball team (0-1) had an early lead but could not hold on against UNLV (2-0) as the Rebels stormed back to take the 8-3 win.
Freshman Peyton Miller continued his torrid start, going 4-4 and scoring two runs. Freshman Rylan Evans added two hits, and junior Jacob Weiss drove in two runs to lead the team.
Freshman Jacob Smith got his first career start on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Both teams went scoreless in the first, as Smith worked his way out of the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
Weiss put the game's first run on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Miller home. Only one Rebel runner reached base in the bottom of the inning as Smith forced weak contact from the UNLV hitters.
The Rebels took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on three hits and a wild pitch. UNLV added one more in the fourth inning after a promising Pacific inning was cut short by a double play.
A Weiss triple brought in Miller on an RBI triple to start the sixth inning. Weiss scored on a passed ball the next at-bat to make it a two-run game. A two-RBI single from the Rebels in the bottom of the inning stretched the lead back to four for UNLV. The Rebels added one more run in the eighth to reach the final of 8-3.
Pacific wraps up its season-opening season series tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 19. The first pitch will be at 12:05 p.m.
