STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific women's volleyball (18-7, 4-3) treated the Homecoming and Family Weekend crowd to a 3-0 sweep of Gonzaga (3-15, 0-7), 25-14, 25-23, 25 -17 Saturday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Tigers have now won 10 straight home matches, including all eight played at home this season.
Pacific was efficient on offense, hitting .316 (50-14-114) for the match, including a sizzling .448 (15-2-29) in the opening set.
"I thought our offense was great today," agreed head coach
Greg Gibbons. "Anytime you can hit over .300, you have a great chance to win the match. It was a real team effort on offense today."
Senior
Alexa Edwards led the team with 15 kills and hit .414 (15-3-29). Fifth-year senior
Biamba Kabengele was right behind with 14 kills, hitting .205 (14-6-39). Senior
Ramonni Cook added eight kills and hit .316 (8-2-19). Junior
Jenna Heller had a team-best 13 digs and 35 assists, along with five kills in six attempts.
Defensively, Cook was also in on a team-best five blocks. Sophomore
Emily Van Groningen tallied four blocks. In addition to Heller, junior
Megan Nishimura and Edwards also recorded double figures in digs with 12 each.
In the key second set, Gonzaga led the back-and-forth action late in the match at 21-19 before Pacific went on a 6-2 run for the win. The Tiger offense came through down the stretch as Edwards had two kills in the run; Kabengele, Cook and Heller tallied one each.
After the match, the former volleyball players in attendance were recognized, honoring the program's storied history that includes nine final four appearances and national championships in 1985 and 1986.
Pacific will play its third straight home match Thursday as Saint Mary's (9-9, 3-3) comes to the Spanos Center to complete the first round of play in the WCC. The Gaels and Tigers entered the weekend tied for fourth in the conference. Thursday's match is the Dig Pink Night for Pacific as the Tigers focus on breast cancer awareness.
