CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Pacific men's golf team finished the Oregon State Invitational with a 36-over-par 888 (292-298-298), positioning in 12th place of 14 teams Tuesday afternoon at Trysting Tree Golf Club. Host Oregon State earned the first-place finish in the tournament, posting a three-over 855.
"The team battled in today's weather conditions," said Pacific head coach
John Cook. "It was definitely quite challenging."
Shooting a 14-over 298 in the final round, the Tigers and the rest of the field struggled against the challenging, windy conditions on the course as no team finished even-par or better. Despite those conditions, the Tigers placed two golfers in the top 35 of the player leaderboard and finished the tournament with the third-most birdies (37), trailing just Seattle and Oregon State.
Freshman
Carlos Astiazaran paced the Tigers through the tournament, finishing the Oregon State Invitational in a tie for 19th place with a six-over 219 (70-72-77). For the second time this season, Astiazaran has placed in the top 20 of the player leaderboard.
Senior
Petr Janik continued his steady play within the field, finishing in a tie for 32nd place with a nine-over 222 (72-72-78).
After the second day of the tournament, sophomore
Timothy Jung moved up 12 spots to a tie for 54th place with a 12-over 225 (73-78-74). Jung led the Tigers with nine birdies.
In his season debut, sophomore
Ian Fritz posted a 14-over 227 (77-76-74).
Fifth-year senior
Maverick Pavletich rounded out the team scoring with an 18-over 231 (79-79-73). Pavletich recorded the team's best score in the third round with a two-over 73.
As an individual, freshman
Samuel Pampling earned a 15-over 228 (79-75-74).
"We are looking forward to some warmer weather next week at our Pacific Invitational," said Cook. "We are excited for the opportunity to play in our own backyard next week."
Pacific returns to action on Monday, Oct. 16, as the Tigers compete in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, hosted at The Reserve at Spanos Park. Fans are invited to the course, free of charge.
