Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Tigers drew their first draw of the season Sunday afternoon against Sacramento State 1-1.
The game, which was moved up twice due to concerns from the heat wave pushing through California, was a battle. Yazid Omri scored his first goal of the season. Samuel Villalta and Jose Maria Barrera both had shots on goal. Samuel Saiz Herraiz had four total shots.
Omri scored early for the Tigers; Cooper Riley collected the ball in the box and sent it to Omri, who put it at his right foot and buried it in the net. The Hornets kept the pressure on the Tigers in the first half but could not find a goal. Down to ten players, Sacramento State played aggressively, with six shots and three corners in the first.
The Tigers did their best to put the game away in the second half, striking eight shots and having four corners in the second half. The teams continued to go back and forth for most of the second half as Pacific looked to secure the win. With just seven minutes remaining, Sacramento State was awarded a free kick outside the box, and the kick found the back of the net to tie the game. The Tigers were able to get a shot off before time ran out, but a Hornets player blocked it.
"I am proud of how hard the guys worked considering the weather and early kickoff," said Head Coach Adam Reeves. "We started the game brightly and had several good chances. Unfortunately, we didn't convert on enough to put the game out of reach, and we allowed Sacramento State to stay in the game. It's another learning opportunity to learn to manage games from ahead, as we have already been in this situation a number of times this season. It comes down to having a tougher mentality to close games out. I'm proud of a number of guys who got their opportunity today to help the group."
The Tigers are back on the pitch on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. PST taking on Xavier.
