LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball team earned its second straight five-set victory Saturday afternoon, downing UC San Diego, 25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11 on the final day of the UC San Diego Tournament at Liontree Arena.
Alexa Edwards,
Ramonni Cook, and
Darina Kumanova all tallied double-digit kills for the Tigers (5-4), helping the team secure two wins this weekend. For the ninth-straight match, Edwards led the team in kills as she recorded 16, while Cook and Kumanova tallied a season-high 14 apiece.
Jadyn Tubbs and
Sedona Sherman propelled the Tigers defensively as Tubbs led the team with 18 digs while Sherman tied a season-high in blocks with three. Tubbs, who recorded her 16th-straight contest with at least 10 digs, has recorded 127 through the first nine matches of the season and ranks first in the West Coast Conference in digs per set with 4.29.
Pacific jumped ahead in the match's early stages, winning the final three points of the first set to secure the upper hand. However, the Tritons (5-4) bounced back, winning the following two sets to gain a two sets to one advantage heading into the fourth frame.
The Tigers recovered and tied the match at two sets a piece, partly to a 7-0 run midway through the fourth set. With the team trailing 7-6, kills from
Emily Van Groningen and Cook and a Tubbs service ace helped to pull ahead, 13-7, and finished off the set for a seven-point win.
A fifth set decided the match for the second-straight contest as the Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the final frame. Edwards, Kumanova, and Van Groningen helped the Tigers to a 7-3 lead midway through the set, while Kumanova tallied the last kill to secure the win.
"I thought we had a lot of fight today," Head Coach
Greg Gibbons stated after the thrilling victory. "We were somewhat inconsistent but found a way to get to the fifth set, and our offense was firing on all cylinders in that last set."
Pacific returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16, as the Tigers face off against CSU Bakersfield at 10 a.m. to open the Central Cal Challenge at the Icardo Center.
