Tigers Fall to Tritons in Home Opener

STOCKON, Calif. - The Tigers fell to the Tritons as UC San Diego scored three second-half goals.

Samuel Villalta and Ryan Her both had two shots on goal and three total shots. Cory Johnson and Derick Roque added shots on goal as well. Eric Cotton had three saves in goal.

The Tigers started the game strong, putting four shots on goal in the first half. Lukas Aeberli went down in the box in the 14th minute to draw a penalty for Pacific. Cool, calm and collected Her buried the shot in the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Tigers added three more shots, but the Triton keeper made the saves and kept it a one-score game.

"I thought the first half we were completely comfortable," said Head Coach Adam Reeves. "They were able to change some things, and it threw us off rhythm. We probably should have scored two or three in the first half and put the game to bed. At the start of the second half, I told the guys they have to take ownership and accountability."

The Tritons came out firing in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute to tie the game. The two teams went back and forth, each having chances before UC San Diego took the lead in the 58th minute on a breakaway chip goal. The Tigers kept the pressure on the match but could not find an equalizer as Villalta had a chance in the 88th minute but could not get it past the goalkeeper. With the entire Tiger defense pushed up to equalize, the Tritons put together a counterattack and scored an insurance goal in the 89th minute to secure the win.

The Tigers are back home on Sunday as they host CSU Bakersfield at 7:30 p.m.
