Toreros Topple Tigers

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers battled the number two team in the conference in a high-scoring matchup. The Toreros used a four-run third inning to take the first game 9-4.

Jacob Weiss and Chaz Myers hit home runs, and Myers had three RBI. Chase Graves, James Arakawa and Weiss all had two hits. Thomas Gavello walked twice.

Hunter Hayes pitched 5.2 innings as the starter, striking out four. Nick Swanson and Jon Fortner both struck out one, and Fortner did not allow a hit in two innings pitched.

San Diego got out to a quick start, taking the lead in the first with an RBI single before adding on in the third, scoring four, including an RBI triple.

A throwing error in the fourth added one more for the Toreros. Myers put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a towering three-run home run to make it a three-run game.

The Toreros responded in the sixth, scoring three runs to extend the lead to six. Weiss hit a home run that cleared the deepest part of the park in the seventh. The Tigers loaded the bases in the eighth inning but did not score as the Toreros took the 9-4 win.

The two teams are back at it tomorrow. The first pitch will be at 3 p.m.
