Comeback Falls Short as Baseball Drops Road Loss to BYU

PROVO, Utah – The Pacific baseball team dropped the second game of the three-game set, falling to BYU, 9-3, in a West Coast Conference contest Friday evening at Larry H. Miller Park.

The Tigers (14-33, 5-18) fell behind early as the Cougars (30-18, 13-10) scored runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage. Hunter Hayes earned the start on the bump, his 13th appearance on the mound season, and gave up five runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Hayes, who leads the team in strikeouts, fanned four Cougars to increase his season total to 53 and has recorded at least four strikeouts in nine of his 13 starts.

Trailing 5-0 in the sixth inning, the Tigers scored three runs to cut into the deficit. Brandon Motheral got the Tigers on the board as he tallied a two-RBI double to deep center field, scoring Thomas Gavello and James Arakawa. Motheral scored in the next at-bat as Jacob Weiss followed with an RBI double to left field. Motheral finished the game one-for-three, increasing his team-leading batting average to .323 and is now second in RBI with 25.

BYU responded in the bottom half of the sixth with two runs while tacking on two more in the seventh to solidify the victory.

Pacific returns to action on Saturday, May 14, as the Tigers take on BYU in the final game of the three-game series, with the first pitch at Larry H. Miller Park scheduled for noon.
