PROVO, Utah – A back and forth battle went on late into the night for the two teams as they played a multiple extra-inning affair. The Cougars came out on top with a walk-off 8-7 win.
Brandon Motheral drove in three runs on two hits.
Chaz Myers drove in two runs on two hits and scored twice.
Jeremy Lea led the team with three hits and a home run.
Thomas Gavello had four walks and scored two runs.
Elijah Birdsong pitched five innings to start the game, striking out six with only two earned runs allowed.
Hunter Schilperoort pitched three innings and struck out six while allowing one run and two hits.
BYU got out to an early lead, scoring three times in the first two innings. Lea hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to get the Tigers on the board. A Motheral double and an error from the BYU outfield helped the Tigers take the lead later in the third inning.
The Cougars scored three more times to take a 6-4 lead into the ninth inning. Myers brought home two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, and then Motheral brought in another run to take the lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Cougars scored in the bottom of the ninth and sent the game into extras.
The scoring was at a standstill until the 12th inning, when the Cougars got two runners on and hit a walk-off single to win the game.
The two teams are back at it tomorrow. The first pitch will be at 6 p.m. MST/5 p.m. PST.
