Guarin Shuts Down Gaels Offense in Win

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the first and did not look back, leading the Gaels throughout the game and ending in a 7-2 win for the Tigers.

Thomas Gavello and Jeremy Lea hit home runs in the win, and both drove in two RBI. James Arakawa had two hits and scored two runs. Chaz Myers had two hits and drove in a run. The Tigers only left six runners on base.

Marv Guarin had one of the best outings of the season for a Tiger's pitcher, throwing 7.0 innings, striking out seven and allowing only one run while recording his first win in college. Jackson Vaughan let up one run in 1.1 innings pitched and struck out one. Caden Duke finished the ninth inning without allowing a baserunner.

The Tigers got on the Gaels early. Gavello scored on a wild pitch, and Myers brought in a second run with a single to third base. The Gaels responded in the top of the second, scoring a run on a single through the left side.

It was a one-run game, but that is all Guarin needed, shutting the Gael's offense down for the next five innings, allowing only a single hit. Guarin's best moment came in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with one out, Guarin struck out two straight to keep the Tiger's lead.

"Was not feeling too good at first but I settled in," says Guarin. "Got some runs up on the board on our side and just tried to keep putting up zeros."

The Tigers scored in the sixth to give the pitching staff an insurance run, as James McClenaghan doubled to right-center to bring Chase Graves in. Gavello hit a two-run home run to dead center in the seventh inning to give the Tigers more breathing room. Lea hit a towering home run to left field in the eighth inning as the Tigers continued to pull away. Saint Mary's added a run in the ninth but could not add more as the Tigers secured the series win.

The Tigers will look for the series sweep tomorrow. The first pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
