STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific softball team wrapped up a three-game series with an 8-7 come from behind victory over Northern Colorado Sunday morning at Bill Simoni Field.
Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first inning, the Tigers (9-24) quickly responded as
Rian Dirmeyer and
Delaney Scully tallied runs in the first and second innings to gain a 2-1 advantage. Dirmeyer, who finished the game with a career-high four hits and was a triple shy of the cycle, scored the opening run as
Bethany Hammer reached on a fielding error from shortstop Jaycie Gandert.
Scully scored later in the second inning as the Tigers once again benefited from a defensive error. After leading off with her sixth extra-base hit of the season, Scully stole third base and quickly reacted to take home on a throwing error from catcher Kaileigh Holland. Scully finished the game a perfect three-for-three, recorded one RBI, and scored one run.
The Bears (14-19) answered in the third inning, jumping on starting pitcher Hammer for five runs to regain the lead. The Bears sent eight batters up to the plate in a six-run third inning and tallied 10 hits during the game.
Trailing 7-4, Pacific chipped away throughout the rest of the game, outscoring Northern Colorado 4-1 in the final four innings, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to take the lead for good. Dirmeyer powered a two-run home run in the fourth, and Hammer finished off the comeback in the sixth inning with a sacrifice bunt, scoring Dirmeyer from third base.
Despite giving up five runs in the third inning, the Tigers put together a strong pitching performance to wrap up the weekend.
Vanessa Strong entered the game in the third inning and only gave up one run on two hits, while
Amiyah Aponte closed out the game and earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one hit, and tallying two strikeouts.
"I was proud of how the team persevered and came through," Head Coach
Brian Kolze stated regarding the team's comeback victory." We must play a complete game to make things easier for us, but they should be leaving today feeling good." "The pitchers did a good job, and [Amiyah] Aponte did a great job closing out, and we got some clutch hits."
Pacific returns to action on Thursday, April 7, as the Tigers face off against San Jose State in a non-conference showdown at Bill Simoni Field.
