STOCKTON, Calif. - On May 16-18, some of the top NCAA Division I golfers in the country will be competing in Stockton at The Reserve at Spanos Park in one of six NCAA regional qualifying events. Either 12 teams and individuals or 13 teams will be assigned to this site, with the top five teams and at least one individual advancing to the national championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The championship field will be announced on Wednesday, May 4, on the Golf Channel.
This is the second Division I golf event hosted by Pacific and Visit Stockton; the first was in 2018. Kansas won the regional. Stanford also advanced to the national championship by placing second, led by Brandon Wu, who is now playing on the PGA Tour. Several other players from the event have turned pro and are having success on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Pacific works in partnership with Visit Stockton to host NCAA events. In addition to the golf regional, Stockton was awarded the 2023 NCAA Women's Water Polo National Championship, competing at the Eberhardt Aquatics Center on campus. Pacific was initially awarded the event for the 2020 season, which is the spring that championship events were canceled due to COVID-19.
Pacific and Visit Stockton had previously hosted the 2019 NCAA Men's Water Polo National Championship, a six-team event that included national runner-up Pacific and champion Stanford. The Tigers were one of the six teams in the championship field, defeating Pepperdine, 17-13, in the national semifinals to advance to the championship contest.
The two organizations also teamed up on the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball regional tournament at Stockton Arena, a four-team bracket that included eventual national champion, South Carolina.
"We are thrilled to again be selected by the NCAA to host a Division I Regional Golf Championship and showcase The Reserve at Spanos Park," said Director of Athletics
Janet Lucas. "The partnership between Pacific Athletics, Visit Stockton, and Spanos Park creates an outstanding experience for the participants and fans. This opportunity also provides national exposure for our university and an economic benefit to our community. This is an exciting time as we will welcome an exceptional group of teams and individuals from all over the country, bringing the best in college golf to our community."
This spring, The Reserve at Spanos Park will be an outstanding venue for this championship event. Initially built in 1999, the links-style course with ryegrass fairways has lengthened by adding six tees and increasing the yardage to more than 7,300 yards to provide a great test of golf for the collegiate competitors.
"The Reserve at Spanos Park takes great pride in hosting this event," said Pacific Head Coach
John Cook. "They have scheduled course maintenance so that the course is in peak condition for the championship."
"Visit Stockton is thrilled to continue our partnership with the University of the Pacific to host these upcoming NCAA events in Stockton," said Wes Rhea, chief executive officer of Visit Stockton. "Not only does it allow our residents and visitors to enjoy top notch collegiate competition from the best student-athletes in their respective sports, but it also provides us the opportunity to showcase our fantastic sports facilities and venues. Hosting NCAA championships also provides an economic value to the Stockton community. Local restaurants, retail and hotels all benefit from the student-athletes, coaches, officials, family members and guests who get a chance to explore our city. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Stockton. We want to thank Pacific for their continued partnership and all of our volunteers who work hard to make every event a success and a positive experience for all involved."
