Tigers Jump on Broncos in the Fourth Inning for First Conference Win

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers took a big fourth inning and did not look back in their 7-2 victory over Santa Clara.

James McClenaghan led the Tigers with three hits and two runs scored. Chaz Myers drove in two RBI on one hit. Thomas Gavello hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Jacob Weiss had two hits, both of which were doubles and drove in a run. Four different Tigers had multiple hits, and six different players drove in the run in the win.

Hunter Hayes pitched 6.0 innings with five strikeouts while allowing only two runs off five hits. Hunter Schilperoort pitched the final three innings, striking out three and recording the save.

"They keep doing what they do and we can have a solid defense behind them, hopefully we just keep it up," says Gavello on the pitching shutting down the Santa Clara offense.

After three quiet innings, the Tigers broke the game open in the fourth inning. Starting with a towering Gavello home run to center, Weiss followed it with a double to left-center. Myers singled to center with two runners in scoring position and brought both runners home.

"He's a heavy changeup guy," says Gavello on his home run. "He threw a changeup first pitch, got barrell on it and fly over center field."

The Broncos responded in the fifth inning; a two-RBI triple made the game 4-2, heading into the second half of the game. The Tigers scored again in the fifth inning, as McClenaghan's double brought in James Arakawa. The Tigers scored again in the sixth and in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-2. After six solid innings from starter Hayes, Schilperoort pitched the final three innings and kept the Broncos from mounting a comeback.

The two teams are back on the diamond tomorrow with the series tied. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m.
