Aggies Outlast Tigers in Back and Forth Extra Innings Marathon

STOCKTON, Calif. – In an 11-inning game that went deep into the Stockton night, UC Davis pulled away with a three-run 11th inning to take the 14-11 win.

James McClenaghan and Chaz Myers both had three hits for the Tigers; McClenaghan also had seven at-bats, all numbers which led the team. Jeremy Lea scored two runs and drove in three with two hits. Thomas Gavello walked three times and had one hit. Four Tigers walked multiple times.

Eight different Tiger pitchers took the mound during the marathon, and Austin McKinney paced the team with 2.2 innings pitched. Jon Fortner and McKinney led the team with three strikeouts each. The Tigers did not walk a batter after the fourth inning. As a staff, the Tigers had 12 strikeouts.

With both teams deciding to go with bullpen games, the Aggies struck first, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning, as Myers drove in a run with a single.

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs, starting with a two-RBI double from Lea and finished off by a Jarron Silva single to left field. Brandon Motheral singled to third in the bottom of the third inning to give the Tigers a three-run lead.

UC Davis retook the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs to take a two-run lead. Colby Canales brought the Tigers within one in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in Myers.

The Aggies scored twice more, heading into the bottom of the eighth as the Tigers looked to erase a three-run deficit. Lea got the rally started with an RBI single up the middle; Gavello continued the trend with another single to bring home Jarryd Wood before McClenaghan tied the game with a single between third and short, tying the game at 11.

After a scoreless ninth and tenth innings, the Aggies scored three times in the eleventh. Despite the Tigers getting a runner into scoring position in the bottom of the inning, they could not tie the game, and UC Davis secured the win.

The Tigers are on the road this weekend, playing two games against Oklahoma with a game against Lamar sandwiched in between. With Sunday being Easter, the Tigers will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
