Softball Closes Out Libby Matson Tournament With Loss to Seton Hall

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Pacific softball team dropped its final game of the Libby Matson Tournament, falling to Seton Hall, 4-3, Sunday morning at Bill Simoni Field.

After a clean first inning from starting pitcher Hannah Glad, the Tigers (6-13) took the lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Bethany Hammer laid down a sacrifice bunt with two runners on base, scoring Emily Budelli to give the Tigers an early advantage. Later in the inning, Marissa Fabian was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 2-0.

Glad finished her third-career start pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and tallying one strikeout. The freshman from Camarillo, Calif., currently ranks second on the team with a 3.73 earned-run average and has tallied four strikeouts in five appearances.

The Pirates (7-7) responded quickly, tying the game in the top of the second inning. Crucial mistakes from the Tigers' defense led to Miranda Arruda and Taylor Hill crossing home plate to even the scoring at two runs apiece. The Pirates took the lead the next inning, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild inning-ending double play. Amber Johnson was doubled up at second base after Hill flew out to the center field with one out recorded in the inning. Before the play occurred, however, Lauren Caye scored the Pirates' third run on the sacrifice fly.

Pacific later tied the game as Carly Lucchetti crossed home plate after Vanessa Strong reached first base on a fielding error from the shortstop Hill.

Seton Hall regained the lead in the top half of the seventh inning as Caye tallied an RBI single, scoring Janae Barracato to solidify the win.

"I think our pitchers threw well enough to win the game," Head Coach Brian Kolze said after the game. "We hurt ourselves because we didn't have enough competitive at-bats with runners on base."

Pacific returns to action, Tuesday, March 8, as the Tigers host Central Florida at Bill Simoni Field with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
