TULSA, Okla.: A big sixth inning ultimately doomed the Tigers 7-0 in their first game against Oral Roberts.
Five strong innings from starter Elijah Birdsong was undone by a lack of Tiger offense and a five-run sixth inning for Oral Roberts.
A run on a wild pitch was the only scoring in the first five and a half innings as Oral Roberts clung to a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. A sac fly extended the lead to two, and Birdsong's day was done. Tyler Stout came in for the Tigers and, after loading the bases, gave up a grand slam to increase the lead to six runs. In the seventh for Oral Roberts, one more run brought the teams to the final score.
The Tigers were limited on offense, accruing only four hits. Colby Canales had the only extra-base hit, a double in the sixth inning.
Birdsong had five strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched and allowed only four hits. Nick Swanson had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched, and Caden Duke recorded his third scoreless appearance with 1.0 inning pitched.
