MALIBU, Calif.: A late comeback was not enough for the Tigers as Pepperdine survived the Pacific surge to secure the 5-3 win.
Seven of the nine Tiger hitters recorded a hit in the game. James McClenaghan drove in two runs while Thomas Gavello drove in a run as well. Chase Graves, Jarron Silva and Ben Nemivant all scored runs for the Tigers.
Hunter Hayes went 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing five runs with two strikeouts. Hayes only allowed one extra-base hit. Michael Defelippi pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, not allowing a hit.
After a quick two and a half innings in which neither team recorded a hit, the Waves got on the board in the bottom of the third, three singles, a walk, and a fielder's choice brought in three runs for Pepperdine and gave starter Trevor Hinkel the insurance runs he needed.
The Waves added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before the Tigers answered with a run in the eighth inning after Hinkel was pulled. McClenaghan brought in two more runs in the top of the ninth inning with a bases-loaded single to left field, which brought the go-ahead run to the plate for the Tigers, but they were unable to capitalize the Waves escaped with the victory.
The series finale between the two teams is tomorrow. The first pitch is at noon.
