Tiger's Downed by Gaels

STOCKTON, Calif – Despite 19 points from Anaya James and the Tigers shooting 43.5% from three, Saint Mary's put on an offensive showcase, scoring 96 points on over 50% shooting. The Tigers fell 96-80 in one of the highest-scoring games of the season.

Along with her 19 points, James had four rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes, all numbers which led the team. Liz Smith scored 12 points with three assists, and Elizabeth Elliott scored 11 points while grabbing three rebounds and a steal. Cecilia Holmberg added four rebounds and two assists.

The Tigers fell in a 5-0 hole early before Erica Adams went on a scoring run, accounting for the Tiger's first four points and propelling the Tigers to a lead with just over seven and half minutes left in the first. A high-scoring Gaels offense pulled away late in the quarter, heading into the second with a nine-point lead.

Jordan Cruz scored back-to-back baskets at the turn of the quarter, bringing the Tigers within two scores. Saint Mary's recovered and continued to knock down shots to build a 19-point lead into the half.

Both teams shot the lights out in the second half, with the Tigers going 7-14 from three in the half and the Gaels shot 60% from the field in the second half. The two teams combined for 97 points in the second half; the first half lead built up by Saint Mary's was too much for the Tigers as they fell 96-80.

The Tigers will continue the four-game homestand on Monday, Feb 7, as they host San Diego at 5:00 p.m.
