Tigers Drop Both Games to Matadors

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.: The Tigers were defeated in both of their seven-inning games against CSUN on Saturday afternoon. A high-powered Matadors offense put together 14 hits and scored 16 runs in a 16-2 game one victory before a big fourth inning propelled them to an 8-5 victory in game two.

GAME ONE | CSUN 16 Pacific 2

The Matadors jumped on starter Marv Guarin early, scoring three runs and chasing Guarin after 0.1 innings pitched. After a four-run first, the Matadors followed it up with an eight-run second inning before the Tigers could settle in and limit the damage after the first two innings.

A Thomas Gavello home run in the top of the fifth got the Tigers on the board as the Tigers were limited to seven hits. The Tigers only struck out four times but had trouble squaring up a very good Matadors pitching staff.

The Matadors added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the sixth in the win.

GAME TWO | CSUN 8 Pacific 5

The second game of the double-header and the third game in the series was the closest. The Matadors struck first with a solo shot in the bottom of the first. The Tigers responded in the top of the second, as Jarron Silva brought in his first RBI of the series to tie the game at one.

Hunter Hayes frustrated the Matador hitters for the first three innings, limiting them to one run and only five hits. A big fourth inning proved to be the deciding point in the game, as the Matadors scored six runs in the inning, taking advantage of the Tiger's errors as only two of the runs were earned.

The Tigers responded in the sixth inning, scoring three runs thanks to an RBI single from James Arakawa and a two-RBI triple to right-center from James McClenaghan. The Tigers had three singles in the seventh inning but could not fully capitalize, with Ben Nemivant bringing in the only run of the inning on an RBI groundout.

The Tigers and Matadors are back at it again tomorrow afternoon to finish the series. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m.
