NORTHRIDGE, Calif.: The Tigers fell in game one of their four-game series with the Matadors 8-3 as three home runs led CSUN over Pacific.
James Arakawa continued his stellar start to the season with a hit and two RBI. Thomas Gavello had two hits and an RBI. Chaz Myers and Colby Canales both hit doubles for the Tigers.
On the mound, Elijah Birdsong threw 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. In relief, Dylan Pottgieser pitched 2.1 innings with four strikeouts, and Caden Duke had one scoreless inning.
The game was a pitcher's duel to start, with only one hit between the two teams through three and a half innings before the Matadors got to Birdsong in the bottom of the fourth. A walk and two singles with a home run to the left sandwiched in-between gave the Matadors a 3-0 lead. In the fifth, a second home run increased the lead to six as the Matadors started to pull away and chased Birdsong from the game.
A Gavello two-out single in the sixth got the Tigers on the board, but the Tigers could not keep the scoring going. In the seventh, a third Matadors home run brought the score to 8-1 before Arakawa brought in two Tiger runs with a single to left field. The Tigers could not finish the comeback, though, as they went down in order in the ninth.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow as they will play in a doubleheader. The first game will start at 11 a.m.
