SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego rallied late in the fourth quarter for an 87-80 WCC victory over Pacific on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. In a game with 24 lead changes, Pacific took the lead for a final time when freshman
Anaya James hit a free throw to complete a three-point play with 4:24 to play in the fourth quarter. The Toreros then went on a 16-8 run over the rest of the contest to come away with the win.
Sam Ashby scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Jordan Cruz scored 15 points,
Cecilia Holmberg scored 12 and
Anaya James scored 10.
Rosie Schweizer had eight rebounds and
Madelene Ennis had seven. James had seven assists and Ashby had six.
Both teams stayed close in the first quarter, a three from Ashby put the Tigers up by six late in quarter and was a key component to the Tigers leading at the end of one. Neither team had a lead of more than six in the half. With six lead changes in the quarter the game was shaping up to be a close battle.
The third quarter was even closer, with the largest lead of the quarter being four points the two teams remained deadlocked, despite multiple Tiger turnovers the team was able to keep it close by shooting the ball above 50% for the final two quarters. The fourth quarter was back and forth, with both teams holding six-point leads, ultimately the Toreros ended the game with the seven-point lead for the win.
The Tigers head to Los Angeles on Saturday to play LMU at 2 PM.
