Volleyball Comes Up Short at Home Against San Francisco

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball team went the distance Saturday afternoon, falling to San Francisco 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 10-15, in a five-set West Coast Conference contest at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Tigers (12-10, 4-6) accumulated 61 kills during the contest, the fifth time this season the team surpassed 60 kills in a match. Darina Kumanova led the team offensively, recording a team-high 14 kills. Alexa Edwards, Ramonni Cook, and Sam Sublett also tallied double-digit kills, with Sublett recording a career-high 10.

Along with tallying a career-high in kills on 19 attempts, Sublett recorded a team-high .526 hitting percentage throughout the contest, the highest total of her career.

Defensively, Logan Blutreich commanded the front lines, recording two solo blocks to lead the team. Through 43 sets played this season, Blutreich has totaled 23 blocks, ranking fourth-best on the team, and leads the team in solo blocks with 10.

The Dons (11-10, 4-6) set the tone of the match in the first set, winning a closely contested frame to gain an early advantage. The Dons began the set on a 9-3 run and never relinquished the lead, using multiple runs throughout the set to keep the Tigers at bay. In the later stages of the set, the Tigers cut the deficit to one, 20-19 and 21-20, before the Dons recorded four of the last five points to secure the first set.

The Tigers evened the score at a set apiece, winning the second set after another closely contested battle. During the second frame, the Tigers recorded a .233 hitting percentage and only allowed the Dons to register 10 kills on 28 attempts.

After dropping the third set, the Tigers bounced back again, winning the fourth frame to force a deciding fifth set. The team recorded a .265 hitting percentage throughout the set and took control late, winning nine of the last 13 points after the Dons came within two points, 16-14, midway through the set.

With the fifth and final set tied at six, the Dons used a 5-1 run to gain a four-point advantage midway through the frame, finishing the win shortly after.

"San Francisco did a great job playing hard today, and we made it hard on ourselves with too many unforced errors," Head Coach Greg Gibbons said after the match. "This is an opportunity to learn and get better."

Pacific returns to action on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., as the Tigers travel to take on Saint Mary's in a West Coast Conference contest at McKeon Pavilion.
