SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a road contest to Santa Clara, 81-59, Monday evening at the Leavey Center.
Khaleb Wilson-Rouse had a career night for the Tigers (6-14, 1-5), scoring a career-high 19 points, and was tied with
Jeremiah Bailey for the team lead. Wilson-Rouse shot 58.3 percent from the field (seven-for-12) and was perfect beyond the arc, connecting on a career-high three three-point baskets. The sophomore from Chicago, Ill., also tallied a career-high in minutes as he recorded 31 minutes of playing time.
Bailey, who also tallied 19 points, led the team in the first half, scoring 14 points to lead all scorers. The senior from Fairbanks, Alaska, shot 62.5 percent (five-for-eight) from the field in the first 20 minutes of the game and knocked down four three-point baskets. Bailey finished the game with a season-high five made three-point baskets and was tied with
Alphonso Anderson for a team-high seven rebounds.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, jumping out to an 8-4 lead in the game's first four minutes. The Broncos (14-8, 4-3) responded quickly, tying the game at 12 shortly after at the 11:11 mark. The Tigers, however, continued to knock down shots as Bailey connected on two straight three-point opportunities to extend the Tigers' lead. The Tigers went on a 22-17 run to close out the first half and led by five, 34-29, at the end of the first 20 minutes of action.
The Broncos came out fast to start the second half, embarking on a 31-4 run to grab a commanding 60-38 lead at the 9:32 mark of the half. Wilson-Rouse eventually broke that run, scoring a three-point attempt to cut the deficit to 19, 60-41, midway through the second half. The Broncos led by as much as 29 during the final 20 minutes of play, 80-51, before the Tigers were able to cut the final deficit to 22 in the game's last seconds on a Wilson-Rouse layup with 21 seconds left in the game.
Pacific returns to action, Thursday, Feb. 3, as the Tigers return home to take on Pepperdine at the Alex G. Spanos Center at 7 p.m.
