SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of the Pacific volleyball team dropped a 25-22, 25-19, 25-13 decision to host No. 25 University of San Diego on Saturday afternoon. The host Toreros have won 23 of its last 26 at home and is the second-straight loss for Pacific to a nationally-ranked team as they begin West Coast Conference play.
The Tigers, who fall to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the West Coast Conference, were paced by a 10-kill effort from
Darina Kumanova. Also for Pacific,
Alexa Edwards had nine kills, six digs and two service aces in the loss.
The Toreros, who improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the WCC, were led by a strong frontline that recorded 12 blocks in the win to go along with .356 hitting percentage. Katie Lukes paced the USD attack with 12 kills, plus Leyla Blackwell had six blocks in the win.
Set 1
The first set was tightly contest as the two teams were tied on 10 occasions and had three lead changes. The Tigers were either tied or led for most of the set until USD went ahead for the first time in the match on a kill by Kylie Pries put them ahead 17-16. Pacific came back and regained the lead at 19-18 on a kill by Tumanova and a service ace by
Sedona Sherman. The set went on to be tied at 19, 20 and 21 before a 4-1 push at the end of the set allowed the home team to take the first set. Edwards had five kills for Pacific, plus Heller had 10 assists and six digs for the Tigers. Kylie Pries had five kills for a San Diego squad that did not have a hitting error and the Toreros registered five blocks.
Set 2
The second set saw San Diego start the set on a 9-4 run for the early lead. The Toreros would go on to lead from start to finish en route to a 25-19 set victory. Kumanova and
Ramonni Cook had five and four kills, respectively for Pacific. USD had four players with two kills and five more blocks to secure the set.
Set 3
USD raced out to a 10-2 lead in the third set and never looked back. Four Tigers had two kills in the set,
Jenna Heller added eight assists. The Toreros' Katie Lukes had seven kills as USD hit .351 to secure the set and the match.
Next, Pacific will return home to host USF for its first home match after playing its last seven matches away from Stockton.
