The University of the Pacific women's tennis team opened up its 2021-22 season with action at the Pacific Women's Invite and the Battle in the Bay.
 
At the Battle in the Bay, the Tigers' Klara Kosan entered the tournament as the defending champion. After missing multiple days of practice due to illness, Kosan started the tournament with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado from Virginia Commonwealth. Next, she took down in the round of 16, No. 1 seed Meg Kowalski of Georgia – who is ranked No. 15 in the ITA rankings - 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Her run to repeat as the tournament champion ended with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 loss to Abigail Desiantnikov of San Diego.

"We were excited to get back to Battle in the Bay after it was canceled last year. Klara got sick and we weren't sure she'd be able to go and try to defend her title. She was medically cleared on Wednesday and we decided to head over to the event which started Thursday. It's a real testament to Klara's commitment and desire that she was able to go out and beat one of the best players in the country while still fighting off sickness and with only one day of practice."

The Tigers were also represented at the Pacific Women's Invite, Zoe Eberle lost in the finals to Jocelyn Massey of St. Mary's (CA). Eberle posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in the round of 16 and overcame a set deficit in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-0) to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, she was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over a competitor from St. Mary's (CA). 

Eberle teamed up with freshman Cindy Ung to reach the finals in doubles play. The duo started the tournament with an 8-2 victory in the quarterfinals. They followed that up with an 8-5 victory in the semifinals to reach Sunday's final. In the final, they were defeated by an 8-5 margin to G. Tevez/J. Massey of St. Mary's (CA).

"Solid weekend on the courts for our squad. Being able to have this event at home before we go on the road for the remainder of our fall schedule got us off to a great start. The home atmosphere was terrific and each player got at least one win. Zoe Eberle making the singles final and the doubles final with Cindy Ung was an outstanding effort. We're going to get back to work over the next few days before heading to Cal."

Next, the University of the Pacific women's tennis team will participate in the Cal Invite, Sept. 24-26 at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.
