Josh Newman Named to Men's Basketball Staff

STOCKTON, Calif. - Pacific Athletics and men's basketball head coach Leonard Perry announced the addition of Josh Newman as an assistant coach on the Pacific staff on Thursday afternoon. Newman was the head coach at University of Texas Permian Basin the past three seasons. Newman, who has 277 career wins as a head men's basketball coach over a 15-year career, coached 12 seasons at Arkansas-Fort Smith prior to UT Permian Basin.

"I've known Josh for fifteen years," said Perry. "He's an outstanding human being, a tremendous family man, and a successful basketball coach. He's had success in his programs in all aspects, from recruiting to coaching to leading a program. And he has done it in exemplary fashion.

"His experience as a head coach will be invaluable," Perry continued. "He'll be an outstanding addition both as an administrator and from a basketball perspective."

Newman's UT Permian Basin Falcons led the Lone Star Conference in scoring in 2018-19 at 85.3 points per game and were second in conference in scoring in 2019-20.

At Fort Smith, he led a program that transitioned from the junior college level to NCAA Division II. His NCAA head coaching record with the UAFS was 168-96 over nine seasons, including four NCAA tournament berths in his final five seasons. Newman's record at the junior college level was 70-25, including two semifinal appearances in the NJCAA region tournament and two top-five national rankings.

Newman spent three seasons at Nevada as an assistant coach. The Wolf Pack was 77-22 over that time span, winning the WAC regular season championship in each season. Nevada won two WAC tournament championships, earning two NCAA tournament berths and advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2004. Prior to Nevada, Newman started his coaching career at Westark (UAFS) College followed by two seasons at McLennan Community College in Waco and two seasons at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

Newman received his bachelor's degree in history from Arizona State University and earned his master's degree in sports studies from Texas A&M-Commerce.
