STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific men's basketball program and head coach
Damon Stoudamire have officially announced the commitment of their four newest Tigers: Alphonso Anderson of Tacoma, Wash., Sam Freeman of Dallas, Texas, Cam Reece of Oakland, Calif. and Khaleb Rouse of Chicago, Ill.
Coming to Pacific after two years at Utah State, Alphonso Anderson joins the Tigers as the reigning Sixth Man of the Year in the Mountain West Conference. Appearing in every game for the Aggies in 2020-21, the 6'6" forward totaled 197 points on the year, averaging 6.8 points per game while shooting 40.3 percent (71-of-176) from the floor, 33.8 percent (23-of-68) from behind the 3-point line and 72.7 percent (32-of-44) at the free-throw line.
In 2019-20, Anderson appeared in all 34 contests for Utah State as well as he was named to the Jamaica Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 21.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game against LSU and North Texas. Scoring in double figures 12 times, he was the only player to come off of the bench to score 20 or more points in a game, totaling 276 points on the year to average 8.1 points per game. Overall, Anderson shot 49.0 percent (99-of-202) from the floor, 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from behind the 3-point line and 75.0 percent (57-of-76) at the free-throw line in his first year in Logan.
Prior to his time at Utah State, Anderson played one year at North Idaho College, leading the Cardinals to a 31-2 mark and a Northwest Athletic Conference Championship. Finishing third on the team with 15.6 points per game, he scored in double figures 22 times, including 12 games with 20 or more points and three games with 30 or more. Logging a total of eight double-doubles during the year, Anderson led the NIC with 9.0 rebounds per game and earned a spot on the First Team All-NWAC.
"We are really excited to add Alphonso to our program," said assistant coach,
Luke Wicks. "He checks all the boxes in what we look for in student-athletes. Alphonso is a proven winner and has the ability to play multiple positions for us. Pacific fans will love his competitiveness and his demeanor on and off the court."
Making the switch to Pacific after spending time at the University of Minnesota, Freeman appeared in 24 total games for the Gophers over the past two seasons, totaling 30 points, 38 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 steals while averaging 5.8 minutes per game.
In high school, the 6'10" center played two years at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas, averaging 13.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Overall, the Texans finished 30-8 and won the 5A district title as Freeman was an All-District and All-Region 1 selection as well as a third team All-Area selection by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram following his senior season. Ranked as the No. 18 prospect from the state of Texas coming out of high school, he broke his school's single-game and season records in rebounding his final year at Northwest.
"We're elated to have Sam on board here at Pacific," said associate head coach,
Leonard Perry. "Sam is a kid we recruited hard out of high school. He is athletic, can run the floor, has good hands… He will also protect the rim and compete on the glass. Offensively, Sam will continue to grow his game as his confidence grows, so his skill set will grow with playing time. But most importantly, he is a great person who was All-Big Ten academically, so we know he will fit in great here at Pacific."
Transferring to Pacific from the University of Akron, Cam Reece will don the Orange & Black after appearing in 31 of 32 games for the Zips in 2020-21. In his lone year at Akron, the 6'7" forward averaged 16 minutes per game and recorded five double-digit scoring performances last season, totaling 177 points, 88 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Before making the jump to Division I, Reece played two seasons at Sheridan College in Sheridan, Wyoming, where he was named a Third Team All-Region IX selection in 2017-18 and a Preseason Second Team All-American in 2018-19. As a local product out of the Bay Area, he also led Oakland Tech High School to a perfect 10-0 record in the Oakland Athletic League as a senior and was named First Team All-OAL after averaging a double-double.
"Cam Reece will be an instant fan-favorite," said assistant coach,
JayDee Luster. "His passion for the game and blue collar mentality is infectious. Overall, his ability to impact winning due to his combination of being an ultra-competitor and having an elite motor separates him from most guys at his position. To simply put it, he is a guy that impacts winning!"
Moving west to Stockton after time at New Mexico Military Institute, Rouse will join the Tigers after an impressive season in the NJCAA circuit in 2020-21. Notably, the 6'2" guard started in 11 of the 17 games he appeared in, finishing first in the NJCAA in free-throw percentage (91.6 percent) and minutes per game (48.0) while also placing second in points per game (21.8). Additionally, Rouse shined offensively by shooting 48.2 percent overall from the field and 40.0 percent from behind-the-arc. Prior to his time in Roswell, he averaged 13.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in his freshman season at Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo, New York.
"Khaleb embodies everything you want in a student athlete at Pacific," said Luster. "He is a high-character individual who strives for greatness in the class room as well as on the hardwood. As a player, Khaleb has an elite knack for scoring the basketball, which is why he was one of the top scorers in NJCAA basketball this past season."
Anderson, Freeman, Reece and Rouse will join a recruiting class that features Jaden Byers of Riverside, California and Luke Avdalovic from Northern Arizona.
