Baseball Drops Finale at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – Closing out their series with an afternoon matchup, the Pacific baseball team (7-17, 0-9) could not find the hits they needed down the stretch on Saturday as Gonzaga (16-10, 7-2) squeezed past the Tigers, 2-1, to take the series finale at Patterson Baseball Complex.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Despite two runners reaching base for Pacific in the top of the first, the Bulldogs plated the first run of the contest in the home half of the first on a double from catcher Tyler Rando to take the early 1-0 lead.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Tigers responded by tying the game on a sacrifice fly from junior James Arakawa as sophomore Thomas Gavello came across in the top of the second to even the game at one through two innings.
  •  With both bullpens locking down in the following innings, another run would not be scored until the eighth inning as the Tigers could only muster three total hits in their final six opportunities at bat.
  • In the eighth, designated hitter Stephen Lund drove home third baseman Brett Harris on a sacrifice fly as the Bulldogs pushed across the eventual game-winning run to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • Although seniors Luke Price and Wyatt Hoffman would both reach base in the final inning, Michael Spellacy denied the Tiger attack in the ninth, securing the 2-1 victory to sweep the series and remain in second place in the WCC standings.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Out of the bullpen, sophomore Grant Stevens logged his sixth consecutive scoreless appearance with 0.2 innings of work against the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
  • At the plate, Price recorded his first two-hit performance of the season while senior Alex LeForestier (6) and Gavello (5) each extended their reached base streaks respectively.

UP NEXT:
Pacific will play their final midweek contest of the year against Fresno State this upcoming Wednesday, Apr. 7 when they make the trip to Bob Bennett Stadium for the second time in three weeks.
