Tigers fall to Aztecs in GCC Semifinals

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – Hosting the Aztecs for the second time this season, the No. 12 Pacific women's water polo team (9-6, 6-1) could not advance in the 2021 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships on Friday afternoon, falling to No. 13 San Diego State (8-13, 6-1), 11-8, in the first semifinal match of the conference tournament.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Kickstarting the scoring just 28 seconds into play, junior Lucy Davis found the back of the cage at 7:32 in the opening period to give Pacific the early 1-0 advantage.
  • Trading blows through the rest of the quarter, the Tigers and Aztecs were knotted at four at the end of the first as senior Emma Myall, redshirt senior Viktoria Tamas and junior Ana Martinez do Amaral each netted their first goals of the match in the first.
  • Finding their rhythm to begin the period, Pacific jumped out to a two-point lead with back-to-back goals at 5:26 and 4:05 in the second from Myall and junior Brianna Utas. Keeping pace, the Aztecs responded with three goals of their own in the second quarter to jump on top by one at halftime, 7-6.
  • Coming out of the break, defense played a major role as both teams limited the opposition to just one goal in the third period. For Pacific, Utas scored her second of the contest at the 3:56 mark. At the end of three, the Tigers trailed SDSU by just one point, 8-7.
  • To begin the fourth, the Aztecs added on with two goals to push their lead to 10-7. Midway through the period, Pacific aimed for some late magic when do Amaral netted her second of the afternoon at the 3:15 mark. Unable to rally in the final minutes with subsequent goals, San Diego State hung on to advance to the championship match of the 2021 GCC Women's Championships by a final score of 11-8.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Overall, three Tigers scored twice against the Aztecs: do Amaral (2), Myall (2) and Utas (2). Additionally, Utas paced the offense with five assists for a total of seven points in the contest. For do Amaral, Friday marked the third straight match and tenth time this season that she has scored at least two goals while Utas netted two goals for the fifth time this year.
  • In the cage, freshman Emanuella Nathan notched seven saves, marking the eighth time she has tallied at least five saves.
  • As a team, Pacific led the Aztecs in total shots (32-21), assists (6-3) and sprints won (4-0).
