SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In the Capital Classic on Sunday, the University of the Pacific Softball team split a doubleheader at Shea Stadium against Sacramento State in the Capital Classic. The Tigers lost on a walk-off play in game one, 1-0. However, Pacific finished the weekend with an 8-1 victory over the Hornets to snap a four-game losing streak.
GAME ONE SUMMARY
Sacramento State 1, Pacific 0
The game was scoreless through 6½ innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets loaded the bases after a walk and two singles. Then, Charizma Guzman hit into a fielder's choice, and an error followed, as Lewa Day scored the winning run for a walk-off victory for Sacramento State.
Pacific was limited to two hits in the game – one each by
Marissa Fabian and
Jessica Mabrey.
GAME TWO SUMMARY
Pacific 8, Sacramento State 1
Myka Sutherlin led off the game with a triple down the left field line. Following the triple,
Carly Lucchetti singled for an RBI, as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first inning, Fabian reached on an error, as
Madison Kahwaty and
Rian Dirmeyer scored on the play to give a 3-0 lead to Pacific.
Day scored on an error in the fourth inning, as Sacramento State got on the board.
Dirmeyer singled in Lucchetti in the top of the fifth, and Kahwaty hit a single to center field for two RBIs, as
Valeria Torres-Colon and Dirmeyer scored, as Pacific led 6-1.
Pacific added a pair of runs to its lead in the top of the seventh. Kahwaty hit into a fielder's choice for an RBI, driving in Lucchetti. Torres-Colon also scored a run in the inning.
Hanna Krosky retired the side in the bottom of the seventh, as the Tigers completed an 8-1 win in game two.
The winning pitcher was
Vanessa Strong, who pitched 5.0 innings allowing no earned runs while striking out four batters faced.
NOTABLE STATS
- Lucchetti finished an outstanding weekend at the plate, going 10-for-17 in the Capital Classic with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs. She went 4-for-4 in game two on Sunday and currently has a .447 batting average.
- On the basepath, Lucchetti finished the tournament with three stolen bases.
- Kahwaty had three RBIs on Sunday.
- In game one, Bethany Hammer pitched 6.0 innings allowing no earned runs and striking out three.
- Through Sunday, Pacific is 5-7 on the season.
