Pacific drops pair of one-run games to UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – In the Capital Classic on Saturday, the University of the Pacific lost two games against UC Davis by one run each. The Aggies took game one, 7-6. In a 13-inning game two, UC Davis defeated the Tigers, 2-1.
 
GAME ONE SUMMARY
 
Myka Sutherlin led off the game with a double, and advanced to third base on an error. The Tigers took advantage of the scoring opportunity when Carly Lucchetti followed up with a double of her own, giving Pacific a quick 1-0 lead.
 
UC Davis would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout hit by Sarah Starks.
 
After a leadoff single from Madison Kahwaty in the fourth inning and a walk to Jessica Mabrey, Hanna Krosky hit an RBI single to drive in Kahwaty for a 2-1 lead.
 
The Tigers added a run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI from Bethany Hammer.
 
Krosky also scored in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, as Pacific took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
 
The Aggies got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Sommer Kisling. Following the walk, Isabella Leon launched a grand slam to left field to put UC Davis ahead 6-4.
 
Lucchetti led off the fifth inning with her third hit of the game, then reached second base on a wild pitch. Lucchetti would score from second base after Rian Dirmeyer reached on a throwing error.
 
In the top of the sixth, Pacific tied the game at 6-6 on a home run from Marissa Fabian.
 
Megan Bower scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Marissa Jauregui in the bottom of the sixth. Going into the seventh inning, UC Davis led 7-6.
 
Although Dirmeyer singled and got into scoring position from a walk to Reagan Hamilton, the Aggies made the final two outs for a 7-6 win in game one on Saturday.
 
GAME TWO SUMMARY
 
After three scoreless innings, Lucchetti led off the top of the fourth with her first home run of the season and second of her career, as the Tigers led 1-0.
 
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Aggies tied the game. Bower led off with a triple, then Starks singled for an RBI.
 
After a scoreless seventh inning, the game went into extra innings.
 
Pacific had three opportunities to score with at least one runner in scoring position in extra innings, but did not capitalize.
 
UC Davis won the game, 2-1 on a walk-off RBI double from Leah Polson.
 
NOTABLE STATS
 
  • Lucchetti went 6-for-10 on Saturday, with two RBIs, a double and a home run. She now leads Pacific in hitting with a .419 batting average on the season.
  • Fabian's home run was the first of her career at Pacific.
  • In the circle in game two, Sutherlin pitched 10.0 innings allowing one run and striking out four batters faced, and had a no-decision.

Pacific head coach Brian Kolze about the game one loss:
"In the first game we did enough offensively but we didn't pitch well enough or play strong enough defense to win."
 
Kolze about Sutherlin's pitching performance and the outcome of game two:
"In the second game Myka [Sutherlin] pitched a great game but we didn't do enough at the plate or make enough adjustments at the plate to be successful"
 
Kolze about looking forward to Sunday's doubleheader at Sacramento State:
"Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and put all three phases, pitching, hitting and defense together."

On Sunday, the Tigers will look to bounce back in a doubleheader at Sacramento State in the Capital Classic. Game one is set for 11:30 a.m., followed by game two at 2 p.m.
