Late Surge Comes Up Short Against Santa Clara

Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Pacific men's basketball team (9-9, 6-7) ended Friday night's contest in the West Coast Conference Tournament on a 21-10 run over the final 8:16 but could not overcome a 16-point halftime deficit, falling to No. 7 seed Santa Clara (12-7, 4-5), 81-76 at the Orleans Arena.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Santa Clara built a 47-31 lead at halftime thanks in large part to going 19-for-32 from the field while holding Pacific to just 1-for-10 from beyond-the-arc in the first half. The Tigers got to within five points on a Daniss Jenkins jumper with 7:25 left in the period, but then saw Santa Clara go on a 17-6 run to close out the half. The Broncos pushed the lead into double digits for the first time on a Keshawn Justice layup with 6:05 remaining to make it a 36-25 lead.
  • Despite a good shooting performance in the second half where the Tigers shot 50 percent (17-for-34) from the field, the Broncos also shot 50 percent in the second half as they had the lead as high as 17 points with 5:55 to play on a pair of made free throws by Giordan Williams, keeping the score in favor of SCU, 77-60.
  • After falling behind 36-25 in the first half, the Tigers didn't get the deficit into single digits until senior Jeremiah Bailey made a pair of free throws with 1:56 to play in the game that made it a 77-68 score.
  • Pacific would trim their deficit all the way down to five points with 49 seconds to play on a made three-pointer by Jenkins that made it 81-76.
  • Subsequently, the Broncos nearly turned the ball over in the backcourt after the Jenkins basket but called timeout and were able to advance the ball into the frontcourt where the Tigers forced a miss, but failed to score on the offensive end as time expired.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • After recently being named an All-WCC Honorable Mention selection this past Tuesday, Jenkins was named the Hardworking Player of the Game after tallying a career high 6 assists along with 16 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
  • As a team, four other Tigers joined Jenkins in double figures as sophomore Pierre Crockrell (14), Bailey (14), graduate student Jordan Bell (13) and junior Jahbril Price-Noel (10) each added their piece offensively.
