STOCKTON, Calif. – It took extra innings, but the University of the Pacific Softball team defeated Nevada, 3-2 on Thursday at Bill Simoni Field on a walkoff RBI bunt single by
Madeline Domingo, as
Valeria Torres-Colon scored the winning run for the Tigers (9-9-1) in the bottom of the 10
th inning.
GAME SUMMARY
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Nevada took a 1-0 lead when Sadaria McAlister scored from second base when Kenzi Goins reached on an error.
In the bottom of the second, Pacific tied the game when the bases were loaded and
Marissa Fabian was hit by a pitch for an RBI, as Domingo scored from third base.
McAlister scored her second run of the game in the top of the third when Lauren Gutierrez hit an RBI single, giving the Wolf Pack a 2-1 lead.
Pacific answered in the bottom of the third inning. Torres-Colon led off with a bunt single and would reach second base later in the inning on a single by Domingo. Then, Torres-Colon scored the tying run from second base on an RBI single from
Madison Kahwaty, as the score was even at 2-2.
The Tigers had runners in scoring position in three of the next four innings, but were unable to capitalize through seven innings played and the game went into the eighth inning.
Nevada had a scoring opportunity in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded, and
Carly Lucchetti reached scoring position in the bottom of the ninth by stealing second base, neither team scored in the first two extra innings.
Starting in the 10
th, tiebreaker rules applied, as Mia Misasi was placed on second base as a pinch runner to start the inning for the Wolf Pack. However,
Myka Sutherlin, as a relief pitcher, retired the side with a foulout, strikeout and a groundout to take the 2-2 tie into the bottom of the 10
th.
Torres-Colon started the bottom of the 10
th placed on second representing the winning run. A well-executed sacrifice bunt by
Rian Dirmeyer advanced the Torres-Colon to third base. Then, Domingo placed a bunt and Torres-Colon scored from third base to give Pacific a 3-2 win on Thursday.
NOTABLE STATS
- Domingo went 2-for-3 on Thursday and is on a three-game hit streak. She now has the highest batting average (.326) on the season for Pacific. She also drew a pair of walks.
- Kahwaty went 2-for-3 with her first two at-bats producing singles and drawing a walk in her third plate appearance. With the two singles and a walk, Kahwaty had a streak of nine consecutive plate appearances in which she reached base.
- Torres-Colon also has two hits, which was her second consecutive multi-hit game and third in her last four played.
- The Tigers had an outstanding combination of pitchers in the circle on Thursday.
- Avery Croxall started the game and allowed only one earned run in 4.0 innings pitched.
- Amiyah Aponte pitched 3.1 innings in relief not allowing a run and had three strikeouts. Her 2.15 ERA is now a team-best.
- The 2.2 innings pitched by Sutherlin were scoreless and had three strikeouts. As the pitcher of record for Pacific, Sutherlin improves to 2-1 on the season.
- Defensively, Dirmeyer had a season-high seven assists at second base.
- Of the 19 games this season for the Tigers, 11 have been decided by one run. Pacific is 6-5 in one-run games.
- Thursday's game was the third of the season for Pacific that went to extra innings. Two of the three extra-inning games were against Nevada.
UP NEXT
The final game of the current five-game homestand for the Tigers takes place this coming Sunday when they host Santa Clara in a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for noon from Bill Simoni Field.
