STOCKTON, Calif. – On Thursday at Bill Simoni Field, the University of the Pacific Softball team hosted a non-conference doubleheader against California Baptist. In game one, the Tigers prevailed with a 3-2 victory. The second game completed seven innings after Pacific overcame a four-run deficit. And due to rain, play was halted finishing with a 4-4 tie.
GAME ONE SUMMARY
Pacific 3, California Baptist 2
Although CBU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after an RBI single by Amanda Argomaniz, the Tigers responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Carly Lucchetti led off the bottom of the first with a single, and eventually advanced to third base after a sacrifice bunt and groundout.
Madison Kahwaty singled to left field, as Lucchetti scored the first run of the day for Pacific to even the game at 1-1.
The Lancers regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. With Maile Olsen on second base after a double, Tiana Patrick got a pinch-hit RBI single, driving in Olsen for a 2-1 lead.
With the bases loaded for Pacific in the bottom of the fourth,
Reagan Hamilton entered the game as a pinch hitter, and drew an RBI walk. Kahwaty scored the tying run. After Hamilton walked, Lucchetti drew another walk for an RBI, as the Tigers took a 3-2 lead with
Jessica Mabrey scoring the go-ahead run.
The combination of pitching by
Amiyah Aponte and
Avery Croxall held the Lancers scoreless in the final three innings, as the Tigers went on to a 3-2 win.
Aponte improved to a 2-0 record on the season and Croxall picked up her first career save.
GAME TWO SUMMARY
Pacific 4, California Baptist 4
CBU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly RBI hit by Katelyn Mangrello.
The lead tripled to 3-0 in the top of the third inning, on a double from Argomaniz that drove in Patrick and Mangrello.
The Lancers added one more run in the top of the sixth, as Makayla Jordan scored from third base after a dropped fly ball. CBU led 4-0 in the middle of the sixth inning.
Trailing by four runs, Pacific rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning. Singles by
Valeria Torres-Colon,
Rian Dirmeyer and
Madeline Domingo loaded the bases. The Tigers got on the board when Kahwaty drew a bases-loaded walk. After the walk, Hamilton entered as a pinch hitter, and hit a sacrifice fly, as Dirmeyer scored, with the Tigers trailing 4-2.
Brianna Rodriguez was on second base as a pinch runner an Kahwaty was on first. Megan Wachholz hit an RBI single to the right side, as Rodriguez scored on the play. Also on the play, an error allowed Kahwaty to score the tying run, as the Tigers rallied to even the game at 4-4.
Aponte entered the circle in the top of the seventh to retire the side in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Torres-Colon reached base on a hit-by-pitch. After Torres-Colon reached, Dirmeyer singled to shortstop, but a throwing error allowed both runners to advance a base, putting the winning run on third base. However, a groundout ended the game with a 4-4 tie as play was halted due to rain.
NOTABLE STATS
- Domingo finished the day going 4-for-6 and is now batting .300 on the season.
- In all six plate appearances on Thursday, Kahwaty reached base safely in all six with three hits. She scored two runs and had two RBIs.
- Hamilton also had two RBIs on Thursday.
- In game one, Aponte had four strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.

"It was nice to squeak out a win and come back and tie a game and actually put ourselves in a position to possibly win it there in the bottom of the seventh, but I think overall the team and the staff feel that we just need to be a little bit cleaner and how we play in all phases if we're going to continue to move forward and be more successful on a regular basis."
UP NEXT
On Thursday, March 18, the Tigers host a single game at Bill Simoni Field against Nevada. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. It will be the third meeting of the season between the Tigers and Wolfpack, with Nevada winning both matchups earlier this season in the Libby Matson Tournament. The most recent game between both squads went to eight innings on February 27 when the Wolfpack won 8-4.
