Pacific splits doubleheader with Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – On Friday afternoon, the University of the Pacific Softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Cal Poly with both games decided by one run each. The Tigers took the opening game, 2-1. In the second game, the Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off 3-2 victory. Pacific finishes the day with a 7-8 overall record.
 
GAME ONE SUMMARY
 
Pacific 2, Cal Poly 1
 
The Tigers fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Maddie Amos led off with a solo home run for Cal Poly.
 
With Jessica Mabrey on base from a fielder's choice in the top of the fourth inning, Hanna Krosky hit her third double of the season. The double advanced Mabrey to third base putting two runners in scoring position for Pacific.
 
After a flyout, Mabrey scored the tying run on a throwing error and Krosky advanced to third base.
 
Even at 1-1, Valeria Torres-Colon hit an RBI single to drive in Krosky as the Tigers took a 2-1 lead.
 
In the final three innings, Amiyah Aponte entered the game as a relief pitcher and shut down the Mustangs to complete the game for her second career save, as Pacific won 2-1 for its third straight win.
 
Picking up her second win of the season in the circle was Vanessa Strong, who pitched 4.0 innings allowing one run and striking out two batters faced.
 
GAME TWO SUMMARY
 
Cal Poly 3, Pacific 2
 
With the bases loaded for Pacific in the top of the second inning, Marissa Fabian reached on an error, and Madison Kahwaty scored to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
 
Cal Poly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Shelby Jeffries hit an RBI single, as Sarah Wulff scored the tying run.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Rian Dirmeyer was on third base. Mabrey hit an RBI single to left field, as Dirmeyer scored to put Pacific ahead 2-1.
 
Hailey Martin led off the bottom of the seventh for Cal Poly, and doubled to center field. Juju Sargent entered the game as the pinch runner representing the tying run and stole third base shortly after entering the game.
 
Xiara Diaz hit an RBI single, as Sargent scored the tying run to even the game at 2-2. Diaz would reach second base after a walk was drawn by Lily Amos, then reach third base on a groundout. With runners on second and third, a walk was drawn by Sydney Frankenberger. When the ball was returned to the circle, Diaz was aggressive with an attempt to steal home plate. Her aggressiveness paid off as she scored the winning run in a rundown to give Cal Poly a 3-2 win in game two.
 
NOTABLE STATS
  • Kahwaty went 4-for-6 on Friday, including three hits in game two.
  • Between both games in the circle as a relief pitcher, Aponte pitched 7.2 innings allowing one run and striking out three batters faced.
  • Dirmeyer is currently on a four-game hit streak.
