FRESNO, Calif. – The Pacific men's golf team finished their first tournament of the 2021 season, placing fifth in the Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
The Tigers got off to a fast start and never fell out of the top five throughout the tournament shooting 855 (-9) for the tournament. It was a great start to the 2021 season after a lengthy delay due to the pandemic.
BYU won the invitational by shooting 833 (-31) as a team. Loyola Marymount finished in second place with Saint Mary's and Long Beach State both finishing just ahead of the Tigers.
Carson Lundell of BYU and Gavin Cohen of Loyola Marymount tied for first place shooting 202 (-13) over two days.
Sophomore
Griffin Long and redshirt junior
Riley Killip both led the Tigers on the course, placing tied for No. 13 overall in the final rankings. Long shot 72, 69, 71 for the three rounds and Killip shot 74, 69, 70. Long finished at 212 (-4) and Killip went 213 (-3) across two days.
Just behind for the Tigers sophomore
Maverick Pavletich who finished tied for No. 21 after shooting 214 (-2) and 71, 70, 73 for the invitational. Junior
Leonardo Rigamonti placed tied for No. 32 going 217 (+1) and 75, 68, 74 overall.
Last for UOP was sophomore
Petr Janik who posted a 227 (+11) 76, 78, 73 line.
It was a promising start for the Tigers and a great return to collegiate golf.
The Tigers will return to action in just a few weeks when they travel south to participate in The Joust, a tournament hosted by Cal Baptist at the Goose Creek Golf Club in Jurupa Valley, Calif. The event will begin on Monday, Feb. 22 and will wrap up on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
