Tigers Hang Tough, Fall Late at USF

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Looking to complete the Bay Area road sweep, the Pacific women's team (6-8, 4-7) could not find the momentum they needed in the closing minutes of Saturday's contest against San Francisco, falling to the Dons, 75-67, at the War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Knocking down an early triple to take the lead, sophomore Sam Ashby put the Tigers on top early, 3-2, with her first three of the evening at 8:33.
  • As the two teams traded baskets through the opening minutes, the Dons would ultimately use a 10-14 run to end the first quarter as USF held a 18-12 advantage heading into the second.
  • Trimming their deficit, Pacific cut the San Francisco lead to just three on a layup in the paint at the 8:37 mark in the second.
  • Following a hot stretch from senior Brooklyn McDavid to close out the first half, the Tigers would keep within striking distance of USF at the half, trailing 37-29 heading into the locker room.
  • Climbing back to even the contest, McDavid would convert on a layup at 6:10 in the third quarter to knot the score at 39.
  • Less than two minutes later, the Tigers would regain the lead on a layup from redshirt senior Valerie Higgins at the 4:20 mark. Unfortunately, the Dons would respond with a run of their own, taking back their advantage as USF was on top 53-48 through three quarters of play.
  • Keeping stride, Pacific got to within three points again (55-52) on a jumper from redshirt freshman Rosie Schweizer at 6:45 in the fourth.
  • Despite one last push for a comeback down the stretch, the Tigers were ultimately fended off by the Dons, as USF buckled down to defend their home court for their sixth consecutive victory, defeating Pacific by a final score of 75-67.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Turning it up to the next level, Higgins was named the Hardworking Player of the Game after finishing with 19 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal. Overall, this marked a season-high on the glass for the versatile guard, which helped Higgins notch her third straight double-double as well.
  • Tallying double figures to join Higgins, McDavid would finish one rebound shy of a double-double (15 points, 9 rebounds) while senior Lianna Tillman added 11 points on 5-of-11 from the floor.
  • Although the result was not ideal, Pacific did lead San Francisco in points in the paint (38-24), points off turnovers (15-14) and second chance points (14-8)

UP NEXT:
Pacific will close out their road trip this upcoming week with a matchup at Portland on Monday, Feb. 8 before returning home to the Spanos Center for two contests against BYU (Thursday, Feb. 11) and San Diego (Saturday, Feb. 13).
