Strong Second Half Lifts Pacific Past USD

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – Squaring off against the Toreros for the first time this season, the Pacific women's basketball team (7-10, 5-9) was able to grind out their fifth conference victory of the season with a 66-61 win over San Diego (10-5, 7-3) on Saturday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting the Tigers on the board, senior Brooklyn McDavid laid home her first shot attempt of the afternoon just 56 seconds into play to give Pacific the early 2-0 advantage.
  • Through the opening minutes of the contest, UOP traded buckets with the Toreros, as San Diego fought back to take the lead at the end of the first, 16-11.
  • Continuing to battle, USD would increase their lead to as many as nine points at the midway point of the second quarter (6:09), but the Tigers would close the half on a run of their own to cut into the deficit.
  • Heading into the locker room, Pacific trailed San Diego by just five, 29-24.
  • Hungry to defend their home court, the Tigers would keep pace with the Toreros out of the halftime break. With 2:50 remaining in the third quarter, redshirt junior Savannah Whitehead would spin past a San Diego defender for a layup to knot the score at 42.
  • Following a clutch three from senior Lianna Tillman with 33 seconds left in the third, Pacific regained their advantage, 47-46, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Turning it on when it mattered most, junior Kaylin Randhawa and redshirt senior Valerie Higgins would come alive down the stretch, converting on multiple shots to keep the Tigers out in front. With 3:02 left in regulation, Randhawa slashed through the paint for the easy lay in at UOP stayed in front, 60-51.
  • Despite one last push from the visiting Toreros, Pacific buckled down on defense in the final minutes, applying pressure to San Diego that would result in offensive opportunities. Needing a bounce back win, the Tigers secured the crucial victory at home by a final score of 66-61 over USD.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Randhawa was tabbed the Hardworking Player of the Game after notching a season-high 19 points, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Additionally, the Turlock native also added two rebounds, one assist and one steal in the win.
  • Higgins continued to dominate in conference play by recording her eighth double-double of the season and seventh in WCC action with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals and 1 block.
  • As a team, the Tigers led the Toreros in points in the paint (28-24), fast break points (10-5) and bench points (33-20). Overall, it also marked the first time this season that Pacific has recorded a win after trailing at the halftime break, as UOP was previously 0-10 heading into Saturday following a halftime deficit.
