Pacific Stumbles Late, Falls at LMU

Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team (6-6, 3-5) opened the second half on a 21-4 run on Saturday at Gersten Pavilion, but it was the Loyola Marymount Lions (9-6, 4-3) who roared last. LMU closed out the last 10 minutes of the game on a 31-13 run to overcome a 14-point second half deficit to defeat the Tigers, 80-76.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Both teams got hot from the floor in the first half as LMU opened 10-for-11 from the field while Pacific would go on to shoot 15-for-26 (57.7 percent) in the opening period. Senior Jeremiah Bailey had 15 first half points for the Tigers who trailed 42-36 at intermission as LMU shot a blistering 68.2 percent in the first twenty minutes, including 6-for-11 from beyond the arc.
  • The Tigers came out as strong as they have looked all season in the second half, opening the period on a 13-0 run on which sophomore Daniss Jenkins scored the first four points. In the following minutes, Bailey would add five more of his own, which included a three-pointer at the 16:26 mark to give Pacific a 47-42 lead. The run was capped off by sophomore Pierre Crockrell II's jumper to make it a 49-42 game, prompting LMU to call a timeout.
  • Pacific would continue to add to its lead, getting a three from Bailey with 10:55 remaining to make it a 60-47 lead. Bailey would make a career-best six three-pointers on the night, including another with 9:37 left in the game to give the Tigers their largest lead at 63-49.
  • Beginning with a shot clock buzzer-beating three-pointer from Joe Quintana with 9:02 remaining, LMU would take over down the stretch. With 3:33 remaining and LMU leading 69-67, Bailey was fouled and made a pair of free throws that tied the game at 69. The Lions would then take the lead for good as Anderson made a three with 3:11 remaining that put LMU in front, 72-69.
  • As the clock ticked down, Jenkins would sink a jumper with 22 seconds left to cut the Lions' lead to three, 77-74. Jenkins would then steal the inbound pass and dish the ball to Crockrell, who was fouled before sinking two from the line to cut the deficit to one, 77-76.
  • Pacific then fouled Quintana, who made the first free throw and missed the second, but Leaupepe grabbed the offensive rebound and was subsequently fouled, hitting a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game and seal an 80-76 LMU victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Bailey was named the Hardworking Player of the Game for the second consecutive contest after finishing with a new career-high with 28 points. Additionally, the 6'6" forward set a new career-high from behind-the-arc (6-11) while also adding 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.
  • In addition to Bailey's career-high 28 for the Tigers, senior Broc Finstuen scored 17 points on 7-of-11 from the floor while Jenkins added 12 on 6-of-10 shooting.
  • As a team, Pacific led in most categories, including points in the paint (36-28), points off turnovers (21-10), second chance points (9-5) and fast break points (11-1).
