Tigers Fall in GCC Championship Game to Long Beach State, 13-9

IRVINE, Calif. - A four-goal game by Bogdan Djerkovic was not enough as the No. 2 seed Pacific men's water polo team dropped a 13-9 decision to No. 1 seed Long Beach State in the championship match of the Golden Coast Conference on Sunday.
 
Djerkovic led the Tigers, who end the season with a 10-12 overall mark. Matthew Hosmer and Eli Lule also had two goals for Pacific, plus goalkeeper John Hedges came away with 15 saves.

The Beach, who will advance to the NCAA Tournament, raise their record to 22-5 and pick up its second win in three meetings on the season over Pacific. The LBSU attack was paced by a four-goal game from one of its six seniors Garrett Zaan. 

1st  Quarter
• Just :29 into the game, Bogdan Djerkovic got the first goal of the game on a power-play opportunity for a 1-0 lead in favor of Pacific.
• LBSU came back with three goals to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

2nd Quarter
• Matthew Hosmer scored his first of two goals to start the quarter, cutting the deficit to 3-2 to begin the quarter.
• Another three-goal spurt by The Beach extended the LBSU lead to 6-2.
• Pacific got back on the scoreboard when Djerkovic found the back of the net just before halftime as the Tigers trailed by three, 6-3.
  
3rd Quarter
• The two teams combined for nine goals in the eight-minute quarter.
• Eli Lule scored twice in the quarter as Pacific managed to cut the deficit to 9-7.
• With a two-goal lead, LBSU closed out the quarter with two more goals to stretch the lead to four, 11-7.

4th Quarter
• The two teams each scored twice in the quarter as the Tigers would never get closer than four.

With the win, Long Beach State will face UC Davis on Dec. 2 for a shot to advance to the Championship Bracket to face No. 1 USC in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on the campus of UCLA.
