Pacific Can't Find Late Magic against Portland

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – Aiming to get back in the win column in their final game of a quick homestand, the Pacific women's basketball team (5-7, 3-6) could not find the stops they needed defensively down the stretch as the Tigers were defeated by Portland (9-6, 6-3), 65-59, on Saturday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With both teams battling out of the gates, freshman Erica Adams nailed a three midway through the first quarter at 4:34 to keep the Tigers within two, trailing the Pilots 10-8.
  • Trading baskets as the opening period came to a close, Portland remained on top heading into the second, 14-12.
  • Staying on the heels of the Pilots, Pacific and Portland continued to match each other blow-for-blow in the second quarter, with neither team able to find momentum on both sides of the ball. Heading into the locker room, the Pilots held a five-point advantage at halftime, leading 33-28.
  • Hitting their first few shots out of the break, Portland extended their lead to nine, 37-28, on a layup by Alex Fowler at 8:54. However, the Tigers would respond by using a quick run of their own to cut their deficit to just one on a Brooklyn McDavid layup at the 3:30 mark.
  • Following adjustments from both teams in the minutes thereafter, the Pilots held a 47-40 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • Despite a three from Portland's Haylee Andrews to open the fourth, Pacific once again  trimmed the Pilot lead to just one as the Tigers stormed on a 9-0 run in the following minutes. Proving their grit, UOP would take the lead on a McDavid layup in the paint at 5:32, putting Pacific on top, 53-52.
  • With the Tigers unable to find the bottom of the net down the stretch, Portland converted on their opportunities in the closing minutes to regain the advantage. Although one last effort would come close, Pacific would ultimately fall to the Pilots at home by a final score of 65-59.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Finding her form, redshirt senior Valerie Higgins was named the Hardworking Player of the Game after notching her 4th double-double of the season and 29th as a Tiger with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists.
  • Carving her role off the bench, McDavid scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting with also grabbing 6 boards for the Tigers.
  • Junior Kaylin Randhawa would also join Higgins and McDavid in double figures with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block against Portland.
  • As a team, Pacific shot an impressive 80 percent from the free throw line (10-12) while also leading the Pilots in points off turnovers (12-11), second chance points (22-12) and bench points (27-13).
