STOCKTON, Calif. – University of the Pacific and Pacific Athletics has officially appointed Robin Goodman as the new men's head tennis coach.
"We are honored to welcome Robin to Pacific as our new head men's tennis coach," said Director of Athletics,
Janet Lucas. "He is the right person to lead this program to new heights while incorporating the values and mission of the university. Coach Goodman brings an unsurpassed energy and passion to both the academic and athletic aspects of this experience…His personal philosophy, recruiting ability, and approach to developing talent will work together to create a dynamic opportunity within a compelling team culture."
Coming to Pacific after serving as the assistant coach at University of New Mexico, Goodman proved to form quite a formidable pairing with head coach Ben Dunbar during his time with the Lobos. Working with Dunbar from the start of his tenure, UNM was 46-39 in his four years in Albuquerque, including a conference title in 2019 after UNM went undefeated in Mountain West play.
"I'd like to thank director of athletics,
Janet Lucas,
Tim Dickson and the entire search committee for giving me this opportunity," said Goodman. "I am grateful and honored to become a member of the Tiger family and I will work tirelessly to instill a culture of pride and excellence within this program. I cannot wait to get started in leading this group of talented young men to winning on and off the court."
While with UNM, Goodman handled all facets of coaching and administration of the program, including recruiting, aiding with the scheduling of matches, on-the-court coaching, overseeing academics and managing UNM's travel logistics as well as their community outreach programs.
Prior to his time with the Lobos, Goodman spent two seasons at Baylor University. During his two seasons with the Bears, Goodman assisted Baylor head coach Matt Knoll, helping the Bears to the NCAA Tournament twice, including an appearance in the NCAA Championship semifinals in 2015. At the end of 2015, Baylor would rank No. 3 in the national polls, the program's highest ranking since 2005, when Baylor was No. 2 in the country.
Individually, Goodman coached Baylor's Julian Lenz, who was ranked No. 1 in 2015, and finished ranked No. 4 in 2015 and No. 12 in 2016.
Before joining the Baylor staff, Goodman spent four seasons in Des Moines, Iowa, as a member of the Drake men's tennis program. Racking up 111 career singles wins, he was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection in addition to being named the All-Missouri Valley Player of the Week three times during his senior year. Additionally, Goodman was a two-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete award winner and finished with the fifth-most career victories in program history.
Goodman will assume the head coach's role for the first time in his career after Jeff Wilson recently withdrew for personal reasons.
Originally from Cambridge, England, Goodman graduated in May of 2014 from Drake University with a degree in business management.
What they are saying about Robin Goodman:
"This is a bitter sweet moment for me… To see Robin move on is tough because he has been so important to our program, but I know he is ready to be a head coach and I am proud of him and thankful for all he has done. Robin has been an integral part of our team for the last four years. He brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of the program, and has been successful at every stop he's made in college coaching. I look forward to following the Pacific's progress over the next few years. We will miss him at UNM and I know our guys are truly thankful for all of his efforts these past four years."-
