PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Pacific baseball team (7-7) could not find the rhythm they needed on Friday night, dropping their series opener to Grand Canyon (8-6), 12-1, at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
Taking the lead in the bottom of the first, the Lopes jumped out in front of the Tigers early, using their home field to their advantage to secure the victory.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Although junior Charles Middleton would notch the first hit of the game with a single into left field in the top of the first, GCU grabbed the early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Drew Smith. Following another RBI hit by the Lopes, Grand Canyon was on top, 3-0, at the end of one.
- The next two innings proved to be painless for both squads, but GCU would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on the strength of three hits, holding a 5-0 advantage through four complete.
- Getting on the board, Middleton pushed across the lone run for the Tigers on an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth, cutting their deficit to 5-1.
- Adding to their lead, the Lopes plated three more runs in the home half of the fifth, remaining out in front of the Tigers, 8-1, after five innings of play.
- Unable to get into a groove with their bats, Pacific would not encounter more trouble on the bump until GCU poured on four more runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth.
- Looking for some late magic, the Tigers battled at the dish in the final inning, but ultimately were defeated by the Lopes, 12-1, in game one.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Providing stability out of the bullpen, senior Keaton Glover was tabbed the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the game after allowing just one run and two hits in three innings of relief. Overall, he also tallied two strikeouts against GCU.
- Delivering when called upon, the top four batters in the Tiger lineup (James McClenaghan, Jeremy Lea, Middleton and Alex LeForestier) all recorded at least one hit in the contest, with Lea and LeForestier each notching two hits on the evening.
- Solidifying the bottom of the lineup, junior Wyatt Hoffman finished one-for-three with one run scored in the loss to the Lopes.
