PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Pacific baseball team (7-8) wasn't able to find its footing Saturday afternoon, falling to Grand Canyon (9-6), 10-5, at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.
Although they would score first, the Tigers could not slow down the bats of the Lopes as GCU pushed across 10 runs on 13 total hits in the contest.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Pacific's offense got a kick start in the bottom of the first inning as junior James McClenaghan led off the game with a double to right field on a 1-0 pitch. After sophomore Jeremy Lea moved McClenaghan over on a bunt, junior Charles Middleton Jr. brought him home with a single to right field, giving the Tigers the early 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
- On the mound, freshman Grant Stevens shut down the Lopes in the first two innings, retiring eight of the first 10 batters he faced. In the second, Stevens escaped a jam after GCU put runners on second and third.
- Finding their groove, the Lopes scored six runs on six hits in the home half of the third inning, holding a 6-1 advantage through three innings complete.
- In the top of the fourth, the Tigers began the inning with a single from junior Alex LeForestier before Middleton and junior Joe Fitzhugh reached base via walks. Unfortunately, Pacific could not drive home any of the three baserunners, still trailing by five at the end of four.
- Trimming the lead in their next plate appearance, the Tigers scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth, which included a two-RBI double from LeForestier. At the end of five, Pacific was within striking distance of the Lopes, trailing just 6-4.
- After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, UOP then led off the top of the sixth with double to left by senior Carter Hayes. In the next at-bat, Hayes was brought home on an RBI double by junior Wyatt Hoffman. This would cut the GCU lead to just one, 6-5.
- Ultimately, Grand Canyon tacked on four more runs over the next two innings of play.
- Despite recording hits in their final two plate apperances, the Tigers were not able to piece together enough hits to tie the game, falling to GCU by a final score of 10-5.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Delivering when called upon, LeForestier was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after finishing two-for-five with two RBI.
- Hitting right behind LeForestier, Middleton also racked up two RBI in the contest to push his season total to 17, extending his team lead to five.
- Coming out of the bullpen, sophomore Elijah Birdsong allowed only one run in two innings of relief for the Tigers on Saturday.
