FULLERTON, Calif. – The Pacific softball team (2-0, 0-0 WCC) got the bats going Friday at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, with a 7-1 win over UC Riverside followed by a 3-1 win over Utah State as
Hanna Krosky went a combined 5 for 7 from the dish in her first two games as a Tiger.
Game 1: Pacific 7, UC Riverside 1
- Riverside got on the board first in the bottom of the second with a homer to left field.
- Ralene Estrada got on base with a double to left center, followed by a six-pitch walk from Talli Shepherd, but two popups got the Highlanders out of the jam unscathed.
- Both offenses went quiet in the middle innings before Pacific broke it open while down to their last three outs.
- Caitlyn Sung started the seventh-inning rally reaching first on a fielding error, then a single from Madeline Domingo and a double from Estrada put Pacific in a 3-1 advantage with a little help from wild pitching by UC Riverside.
- The Tigers capitalized on more Highlander miscues in the seventh with Madison Kahwaty scoring on a fielding error to make it 4-1.
- Myka Sutherlin tossed six innings of work, picking up five strikeouts in the Tigers' season opener.
- Estrada was the offensive catalyst for the Tigers in their seventh-inning run, ending the morning with a 2-for-3 clip from the plate with a two-run RBI double in the seventh. Krosky added to the offense, going 2 for 4 with a seventh-inning triple as part of the rally.
WHAT COACH KOLZE SAID:
"Tremendous job all the way around. Myka (Sutherlin) and (Bethany) Hammer were awesome in the circle. Defensively, we were outstanding. And the hitters made great adjustments at the plate. You see us getting better offensively as we went until we finally broke through and put a lot of pressure on in the seventh inning.'
Game 2: Pacific 3, Utah State 1
- Both teams started out cold from the plate with Krosky getting the only hit for either team early on, a single up the middle in the top of the first.
- The Tigers did all their damage in the third inning, going for three runs beginning with an RBI bunt single off the bat of Carly Lucchetti.
- Krosky kept up her prowess offensively, going 3 for 3 with a walk and a run to cap off the Phoenix native's stellar first day of competition in a Pacific uniform.
- Vanessa Strong saw her first bit of collegiate action as well, earning the start against the Aggies and going 5.0 innings in the circle with four strikeouts.
- Bethany Hammer closed things out in the circle for the Tigers, going 2.0 innings for her first save on the year while also picking up an RBI.
WHAT COACH KOLZE SAID:
"What a tremendous job by
Vanessa Strong in her college debut! She threw a tremendous game. And Hammer did a great job shutting them down to close out the game. Obviously when you pitch the way we did today and not making a single error on defense as well, will keep you in a lot of games. By only having the one scoring inning, today in each game, we learned a lot on how to win late and how to hold on late for a win."
