Pacific Hangs On to Even Series

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Pacific baseball team (6-4) squeezed past Seattle University (4-5), 6-5, on Saturday afternoon at Bannerwood Park.

Despite inclement weather in the area and an earlier than expected start time, the Tigers took the lead in the first inning and never looked back.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Kickstarting the offense right out of the gates, sophomore James Arakawa doubled home fellow classmate Jeremy Lea to give the Tigers the early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.
  • After two scoreless innings from freshman Grant Stevens, Pacific extended their lead to 2-0 as Lea came around to score for the second time on an RBI groundout by junior Alex LeForestier in the top of the third.
  • In the home half of the inning, the Redhawks would respond with a run of their own, but UOP was still on top, 2-1, after three complete.
  • With neither team scoring in the fourth, the Tigers broke things open in the top of the fifth. First, junior Wyatt Hoffman scored after LeForestier reached on a Redhawk error to make the score 3-1. Next, junior Charles Middleton crushed his first home run in the Orange & Black as Pacific jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
  • Showing out on the mound, Stevens delivered two more painless innings for UOP before being relieved by redshirt junior Nick Swanson in the home half of the seventh.
  • Although Seattle would counter with three runs, the Tigers were still out in front of the Redhawks, 6-4, after seven innings of play.
  • Unable to drive home insurance runs in the following innings, Pacific turned to junior Landon Curtis to slam the door on their opponent in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Doing just that, the right-hander picked up his first save of the season by stranding a Seattle baserunner on third to end the game and secure the 6-5 victory for the Tigers.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Impressing with the bat in his hands, Middleton turned in his second four-hit performance of the young season to be named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game. In addition to his four hits, the left fielder also finished with 2 RBI, one run scored and one walk in the victory.
  • Moving up to the number two spot in the lineup, Lea finished 2-for-3 against the Redhawks on Saturday, including a team-high three runs scored.
  • On the rubber, Stevens picked up his first collegiate win after recording a final line of 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 SO and 0 BB.
  • Out of the bullpen, Swanson delivered two scoreless innings of relief for the Tigers, striking out two to keep UOP on top when it mattered most.
UP NEXT:
