BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Pacific baseball team (7-5) split their doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against Seattle University (5-6), dropping their first contest, 4-3, before tallying a new season-high in runs scored with a 17-1 victory in game two.
Following a late rally by Seattle in game one, the Tigers avenged their loss in game two, officially completing the first series of their twelve-game road stretch.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Game One-
- Finding his groove out of the gates, junior Hayden Pearce faced the minimum through three innings as the Tigers and Redhawks were scoreless after three complete.
- Getting on the board first, senior Carter Hayes unloaded on the baseball for his first home run of the year with two out in the top of the fourth, bringing home sophomore James Arakawa and giving Pacific the 2-0 lead.
- Just one inning later, the Redhawks would even the score with two runs of their own in the home half of the fifth.
- After junior Charles Middleton walked and Arakawa reached on an error to begin the sixth, junior Joe Fitzhugh singled into left field to plate Middleton as UOP retook the lead, 3-2, over Seattle.
- Battling back in their turn at the dish, the Redhawks drove home two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, holding a 4-3 advantage heading into the seventh.
- Due to WAC rules, teams only play seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not respond and tie the game in the top of the seventh, falling to Seattle by a final score of 4-3 in game one.
Game Two-
- Striking first in both games, Pacific jumped out in front 2-0 on an RBI double down the left field line from Hayes in the top of the second inning.
- Taking advantage of mistakes by the Redhawks, UOP extended their lead to 3-0 when Hayes scored on a wild pitch by Seattle pitcher Josh Thompson.
- Gaining momentum in the batter's box, the Tigers put up a four-spot in the top of the third on five hits, including RBI singles from Fitzhugh, junior Wyatt Hoffman and junior James McClenaghan.
- Although the Redhawks countered by pushing across their first run of the ballgame in the home half of the third, Pacific pushed their lead to eight (9-1) on back-to-back RBI hits from Fitzhugh and Hayes in the top of the fourth.
- Hitting their stride, Arakawa delivered a two-RBI single to centerfield before the scorching hot Fitzhugh doubled home Middleton with two outs in the top of the fifth. Scoring one more on another error by Seattle, the Tigers led the Redhawks, 13-1, at the end of five.
- Breaking the game open, UOP scored four runs for the second straight inning and third time overall in the top of the sixth, widening the gap to 17-1. This time around, the runs came on the strength of the long ball as Middleton crushed his second of the year while Fitzhugh matched him just one batter later to complete the cycle and record his fifth hit of the contest.
- Calling on their bullpen to lock down the victory, sophomores Michael Defelippi and Elijah Birdsong and seniors David Rajeski and Keaton Glover combined for four scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.
- Bouncing back with a statement win, Pacific defeated Seattle by a final score of 17-1 in game two to split the series with the Redhawks.

- Catching fire at the plate, Fitzhugh took home the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Day honors following an impressive 6-for-9 performance, which included hitting for the cycle and five total RBI.
- Stabilizing the middle of the lineup, Hayes also dazzled with the bat in his hands, finishing the day 3-of-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.
- In the second contest, McClenaghan was a spark at the top of the lineup, tallying four hits in six appearances along with two RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
- On the mound, sophomore Dylan Pottgieser cruised to his second win of the season by allowing just one run in five innings of work in game two of the doubleheader. Additionally, Pearce continued his streak of quality outings by going at least 5.0 innings in his third consecutive start.
- Through 12 games played, Middleton has proved why he is one of the most vital pieces of the Tiger lineup as the left fielder currently leads the team in batting average (.426), home runs (2), RBI (14), total bases (30), runs scored (12), hits (20), doubles (4), slugging percentage (.638) and OPS (1.155).
