BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Pacific baseball team (5-4) fell to Seattle University (4-4), 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Bannerwood Park.
Never truly finding their groove at the plate, the Tigers did not record their first hit of the contest until the seventh inning and ultimately tallied just two hits overall against the Redhawk pitching staff.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Matching each other through the first three innings, starting pitchers Jarrod Billig (SEA) and junior Lucas Sweany both stifled the opposing lineup as the two teams were knotted at zero through after three complete.
- Getting on the board an inning later, Julian Kodama doubled home Nolan Jekich as the Redhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the fourth.
- Extending their advantage, Seattle tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth following a two-run home run from Trevor Antonson.
- Unable to gain much momentum in the box, the Tigers did not tally their first hit of the ballgame until a triple to right field by junior Alex LeForestier to lead off the seventh inning.
- Adding insurance to their lead, the Redhawks pushed across one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt by Gavin Rork.
- Battling no matter the score, Pacific scored their first run of the game after an RBI double by junior James McClenaghan drove home junior Wyatt Hoffman, cutting the Seattle lead to 4-1.
- Following suit, junior Charles Middleton then brought home UOP's second run of the contest on an RBI groundout as sophomore James Arakawa crossed the plate.
- Unfortunately, the Tigers would not be able to conjure another late-inning rally in the top of the ninth, falling to the Redhawks by a final score of 4-2 in game one of the series.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Providing the spark for UOP's offense, McClenaghan was named the City of the Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI double and one walk. Overall, the junior is now hitting .353 on the season, good for second on the team only behind LeForestier (.414).
- Showing he can be a steady option on the mound, Sweany tallied 6.2 innings on the rubber against Seattle. The left-hander has now pushed his streak of at least 5.0+ innings pitched to three games.
- Making the Redhawks work, Hoffman also tallied two walks and one run scored in the loss.
- Finding his stride on the hill, junior Henrik Reinertsen notched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief on Friday afternoon, increasing his streak of scoreless appearances to four straight.
