FRESNO, Calif. – The Pacific softball team (8-5, 0-0 WCC) split the final day of the Fresno State Invitational at Margie Wright Diamond with a five-inning 8-0 win over UC Santa Barbara, followed by a 4-0 defeat to host Fresno State.
Game 1: Pacific 8, UC Santa Barbara 0
- Jessica Mabrey tied a career high with four RBIs to put on her second show of the tournament against the Gauchos. Mabrey singled up the middle in the top of the fourth inning to clear the bases and put the game out of reach at 8-0.
- Talli Shepherd stole second in the first inning after reaching on a Gaucho error to put an offensive threat in place, but it wasn't until the second inning where the Tigers would strike first.
- Hanna Krosky did the honors, belting an RBI single to right in the second inning to score Carly Lucchetti, who opened the inning with a leadoff single.
- Pacific got three more RBI singles out of the frame, followed by an RBI double from Mabrey that scored Shepherd. All together, the Tigers plated five runs on six hits in a very well-executed second inning.
- Santa Barbara put three on in the fifth to try and take away a run-rule situation, but Pacific wasn't having it and downed the Gauchos for the second time in three days.
- Myka Sutherlin earned her fourth win of the season with three strikeouts.
What Coach Kolze Said
"We played a great all-around game this morning. We played great defense and had a lot of timely hitting, as well as great baserunning. It was a great offensive game out of Mabrey, and although Myka (Sutherlin) wasn't quite as sharp as normal, she did a great job of battling through it to finish the game."
Game 2: Fresno State 4, Pacific 0
- Pacific battled another national power in Fresno State to close out the Fresno State Invitational at Margie Wright Diamond, seeing their opportunities but not being able to take advantage against the Bulldogs.
- The Tigers would not go down without a fight though, putting three of their first four leadoff batters on base with two singles.
- UOP saw a chance to tie in the sixth down two runs, putting runners on the base path by way of a fielder's choice and a single.
What Coach Kolze Said
"I thought we played a pretty good game, but just got beat. Fresno did a really good job manufacturing runs off their opportunities and we couldn't score. Outside of the walks, I thought Farrah (Steffany) did a really good job battling, and our defense was outstanding."
