Baseball Steals Series From Jackrabbits on Walk-Off

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team (5-2) used late-game heroics for the second day in a row to defeat South Dakota State (1-5), 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field.

Coming through with both the game-tying and game-winning hits, junior Alex LeForestier was the difference maker for UOP in the series finale.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Taking the ball after a dominant performance on opening weekend, junior Hayden Pearce turned away the Jackrabbits in the opening frame.
  • In the home half of the second, LeForestier was hit by a pitch before Carter Hayes doubled down the left field line. Just one batter later, senior Luke Price knocked in the first runs of the contest on a double of his own, making the score 2-0 in favor of Pacific through two innings of play.
  • Unfortunately, South Dakota State tied the game shortly thereafter on a two-run home run by Landon Badger in the top of the third.
  • With neither team gaining any momentum through the next few innings, the Jackrabbits would tack on three more runs in the top of sixth to take a 5-2 advantage heading into the home half of the inning.
  • Keeping SDSU on their heels, sophomore Jeremy Lea drilled his first long ball of the year with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Jackrabbit lead to 5-3.
  • Through the next three innings, neither team would add to their run total, sending the Tigers to the plate down two in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Never losing faith, Pacific loaded the bases before LeForestier laced a two-run double down the right field line to even the score at five.
  • Heading into extra innings, junior Landon Curtis shut down the Jackrabbits in the top of the tenth and eleventh innings to give the Tigers the opportunity for more heroics at the plate.
  • Proving to be the deciding factor, LeForestier doubled home junior James McClenaghan in the home half of the eleventh as the Tigers walked-off for the win for the second time in as many days.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leading the team with three RBI, LeForestier was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after notching two hits in three trips to the dish while also adding two walks and one run scored
  • Delivering out of the bullpen, sophomore Michael Defelippi came up clutch for UOP, tossing 3.0 innings of scoreless relief in route to tallying four strikeouts on just one hit allowed.
  • For the third time this year, Price notched two RBI's for the Tigers, including one hit in his five plate appearances.
  • Providing a spark at the top of the order, sophomore James Arakawa and McClenaghan combined for five hits and three runs scored in the win over the Jackrabbits.
  • On the bump, Curtis picked up his first victory of the year after delivering 1.1 innings of shutout baseball.
